Cognitive-Brain Function Testing
What is Cognitive Function Testing?
Cognitive Function testing is a scientific based assessment tool that can measure your brain’s capacity to carry out specific tasks.
These tasks include areas such as verbal processing, spatial memory, grammatical reasoning, working memory and attention to mention a few.
APC Physio & Sports Clinic Offers Cognitive Assessments to Objectively Measure Cognitive Brain Function for a broad range of people.
Why Measure Cognitive-Brain Function?
We all have a subjective idea of how our brains are doing—some days we feel “off” or have “brain fog,” while other days we feel like we can take on the world. But how much better are we on the good days?
Are lifestyle or health changes making a difference? That’s where cognitive assessment comes in.
By putting a number to these subjective feelings, we can discover what is causing the good days in order to have more of them. When your brain is performing, every activity in your daily life will be easier, from remembering where you parked your car, to learning new skills, to doing your taxes.
Creyos Health: An Engaging and Scientifically-Validated Cognitive Assessment Platform
APC Physio & Sports Clinic uses a leading cognitive assessment platform, Creyos Health, to quickly measure brain health.
Your healthcare practitioner will offer these measures to assess, monitor, and manage core areas of cognition to ensure that your treatment programme has you on the right track.
The Creyos Health tasks have been validated by decades of scientific research, and are proven to measure the most important aspects of cognition.
Performance is directly linked with the areas of your brain that are active when you’re at your sharpest. But more importantly, the tasks are fun, and only take 1.5 – 3 minutes each to complete.
Now, not only will you feel better, but you can objectively track how your brain is responding to your treatment programme or recovering after a concussion.
Who is the Testing for?
Concussion: Some examples include those who play contact sport where concussion and traumatic brain injury is a risk that is part and parcel of the game. Having a baseline assessment completed prior to sustaining a concussion related brain injury will help to more accurately diagnose and manage the area (s) of the brain injured. Concussion reports are detailed and can easily be shared with relevant club and medical staff. Subsequent follow up tests will clearly indicate the difference in brain function from baseline and post injury until the person has made a full recovery.
Neurological conditions: can also be assessed and monitored once or twice per year. Examples include Parkinsons, Alzihemers, Age Related Decline or Dementias. Testing may provide some early insight to family and medical staff if a new treatment approach is working. Testing once to twice per year will also allow you to accurately monitor a person’s status. Any improvements can be noted. Any disimprovements can be noted and acted on as appropriate. Reports can easily be shared for recording and logging purposes.
Developmental Delay or Autism: Children who may demonstrate signs of developmental delay in certain areas can be tested using this platform. Detailed reports will compare them versus age and sex matched individuals from what is considered a ‘normal population’. These figures are compared to the data of over seventy thousand tests. Test results will clearly indicate how each part of the brain is functioning. Response to treatment or interventions can be established at regular intervals. Detailed reports can easily be shared.
It is standard practice to objectively check up on areas such as memory, attention, reasoning, and verbal ability—all cognitive abilities you need to function optimally in everyday life. It’s not a test—it’s a quick checkup on how you’re doing today, like a blood pressure cuff for your brain.
Do you need to come into the clinic for testing?
No. This test is completed online. You will need a laptop or tablet to complete the test. You will also need to be in a quiet room for the duration of the test. This is critical to get an accurate result.
How much does it cost?
€35
Please note this fee includes a maximum of two more follow up tests at a later date. To arrange a repeat test please contact us directly.
Sports Clubs
We do offer reduced rates for club based squads with large panels of 20-50 players. This feature is now seen as central to how clubs priorities player welfare and mental health. This service is easy to use, provides prompt evidence based reports to help accurately diagnose and manage all traumatic brain injury due to concussion. Please enquire here if you wish to discuss baseline concussion testing for your club.
When do I get my results?
Once your test is complete we will receive a notification when your results are available. They will be forwarded to your registered email within 24-48 hours.
What happens with the results?
Results may or may not mean specific action is taken. For example, if someone has tested their cognitive brain function out of personal interest they may simply want to compare it to a retest in six to twelve months.
If for example, a person with a neurological condition or learning difficulty is to start a new intervention or treatment approach, then their recent test report will provide an accurate current reference point. Retesting during or after the intervention can be easily conducted to help gauge the response to the intervention and may be helpful to inform future treatment(s).
In the example of a sports person who plays a contact sport that comes with a risk of concussion, their baseline test results will be shared with them and will also be stored securely in their profile. If that player sustains a concussion related injury during the year, they (their club, sports doctor or physio or treating therapist) can simply request a new test. This will determine the exact nature of the injury and will help the early accurate management of this player. Reports can be shared with neurologists (with permission) in the event of prolonged recoveries.
Our Stories
Hi guys – just want to give some feedback on the importance of concussion testing. I took a knock to the head during a hurling game early in the season. I displayed concussion symptoms and the guys at APC sent me a concussion test that evening. The test is easy to complete – 20 minutes online.
The test results were available the next day and after concussion was confirmed, the guys at APC were great with working out a plan to get me back on the pitch using return to play protocols.
The treatment from APC gave me confidence to return to the pitch knowing that I was fit to play. I would highly recommend anyone playing contact sports to use the concussion testing offered by APC. I would also recommend getting a baseline test done in the off season as this gets best results if you take a hit during the year.
Thanks again for the help.
