What is Postnatal Pilates
Postnatal Pilates is a tailored exercise method designed to help new mums regain strength, improve posture, and support recovery after childbirth.
Focused on rebuilding core stability and pelvic floor strength, these classes offer gentle, controlled movements that aid in healing and relieve postpartum discomforts.
With an emphasis on flexibility, mobility, and overall wellbeing, Postnatal Pilates provides a safe and supportive way for mothers to reconnect with their bodies during the postpartum period.
When To Start Postnatal Pilates
After childbirth, your body undergoes significant changes, and it’s important to approach exercise with patience and care. While society often pressures new mums to “bounce back” quickly, the focus should be on exercising safely and correctly for long-term health benefits.
Postnatal Pilates, guided by an expert physiotherapist, is designed to address common postpartum issues such as core weakness, pelvic floor concerns, and posture imbalances.
Physiotherapists understand the unique needs of new mothers and will tailor exercises to support your recovery and help you achieve both short-term and long-term gains. It’s best to wait until after your postnatal check-up, usually around 6 weeks, or as advised by your healthcare provider, before starting Pilates to ensure you’re ready for exercise.
Postnatal Pilates Group Classes
We understand that childcare can be a significant obstacle for many new mums, especially those with younger or breastfed babies. That’s why we’re happy for you to bring your baby along to our postnatal Pilates group classes. Simply bring a small seat or carrier to keep your baby next to your mat during the session.
Our classes are designed to support your recovery while accommodating the realities of motherhood, making it easier for you to prioritize your health and well-being without the stress of arranging childcare. Join us for a supportive and inclusive environment that works for you and your baby.
Benefits of Postnatal Pilates
Exercising after birth and recover has a multitude of benefits such as:
Targeted Recovery for Core and Pelvic Floor Muscles
Pregnancy can significantly weaken the core and pelvic floor muscles. Postnatal Pilates, led by a physiotherapist, focuses on safely and gradually rebuilding strength in these areas. This approach helps reduce the risk of common postnatal issues such as:
- diastasis recti (abdominal separation)
- urinary incontinence
- pelvic organ prolapse
Upper Back and Shoulder Pain
After childbirth, especially when breastfeeding, tightness and discomfort in the upper back and shoulders are common. Postnatal Pilates includes mobility exercises that alleviate pain, improve posture, and increase comfort during feeding and baby care.
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)
Postnatal Pilates encourages gentle activation of the core, pelvic floor, and hip muscles to stabilise and support the pelvis. By addressing weaknesses in these areas, Pilates can help reduce pelvic girdle pain and provide a solid foundation for pelvic health during recovery.
Tailored Approach
In addition to group classes, we offer one-on-one assessments to address your individual postnatal needs. A personalised, progressive program ensures that exercises are tailored to your unique recovery journey, making your progress safer and more effective.
Wellbeing
Beyond physical recovery, Postnatal Pilates promotes overall wellbeing by reducing stress, improving mood, and boosting energy levels, helping new mothers regain confidence and feel more balanced during the postpartum period.
