Shoulder Pain Treatment Cork
Overcome Shoulder Pain and Restore Function
When you experience shoulder pain, simple tasks can suddenly feel impossible. Reaching for a teacup from the kitchen shelf or putting on your jacket can suddenly become agonising. If you experience pain or limited movement in your shoulder, always seek help from an experienced physiotherapist to avoid long-term issues.
Whether your shoulder pain stems from a sports injury, general muscle weakness, tendon degeneration or an underlying condition, early intervention is key to preventing chronic pain and restoring movement.
At APC Physio & Sports Injury Clinics in Cork and Fermoy, we specialise in diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating all types of shoulder complaints.
Six Common Causes of Shoulder Pain
Shoulder joints are highly mobile, allowing us to lift our arms up and down, push forward and backwards, and even rotate them. It is this versatility in mobility that makes shoulders prone to injury and pain, resulting in limited function. So, ensuring a correctly functioning rotator cuff and surrounding muscles is central to a happy and healthy shoulder joint.
Some common causes of shoulder pain at any age include:
One of the more common shoulder injury types is rotator cuff injuries. Rotator cuff injuries can happen over time from wear and tear caused by daily activities. This wear and tear damages the small stabilising muscles in the shoulder that maintain the ball correctly positioned in the socket.
Although rotator cuff injuries are more typically caused by degeneration that comes with age, they can also be caused by trauma from injury.
A frozen shoulder is an extremely painful condition that can be slow to recover from. It can be recognised by severe stiffness and pain due to inflammation of the capsule of this ball-in-socket joint.
Statistically, women over 40 are the most likely to experience a frozen shoulder due to hormonal changes.
Tendinopathy is an injury resulting from a lack of use or overuse that leads to the irritation of tendon tissues, resulting in pain, limited movement and lack of strength. Tendinopathy in the shoulder can cause swelling in the tendon, tendon fibre tears and is often more common in people who do manual work or sports involving the arm but can also impact sedentary people due to general deconditioning.
Bursitis of the shoulder typically presents as pain at night or pain with overhead activities. Bursitis is usually the result of any combination of a weak rotator cuff and repetitive movement and can be recognised by a reduction in joint range of motion or spinal stiffness.
This condition can be over-complicated with an unnecessary reliance on pain medication instead of addressing the actual root cause, which could be a combination of reduced rotator cuff strength as mentioned above, joint or spinal stiffness or poor movement.
Shoulder joint instability can cause you to experience shoulder weakness, numbness or even a tingling sensation. Previous dislocations are often the cause. Especially if rehabilitation is not properly completed.
Wear and tear causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility are part of life for nearly everyone. Don't let a diagnosis of Arthritis or degenerative changes stop you from being proactive.
Maintaining physical function is essential for managing Arthritic changes. You probably hear the term ‘ use it or lose it’ and there is a lot of sense in this. Though it might seem counter-intuitive, the right amount and type of movement helps reduce pain and increase strength. In turn, this can help improve your overall pain levels and function.
If shoulder pain is affecting your daily life, don’t choose to accept the pain; an APC Physio can provide targeted solutions to help you today.
APC Tip: Try these simple moves to test your shoulder mobility
Identifying Shoulder Pain
When experiencing shoulder pain and difficulty moving your arm, it’s important to determine whether a frozen shoulder or another condition is limiting your range of motion. Understanding the possible causes can help guide the right treatment approach.
Shoulder pain that radiates, extending from the shoulder into the arm, neck, or upper back can be caused by:

Nerve compression, also called Cervical Radiculopathy.
Often referred to as a ‘pinched nerve’, nerve compression pain is often accompanied by weakness and numbness.

Referred Pain
Pain from other areas of the body can sometimes be felt in the shoulder and is known as referred pain.
There are several common reasons for referred pain in the shoulder including myofascial pain from the neck or rotator cuff musculature. In rarer cases, issues in the heart, liver, or gallbladder can sometimes cause shoulder discomfort. These more subtle forms of shoulder pain will be screened for in your first APC session.

Shoulder Impingement
When tendons and bursae are compressed and irritated within the shoulder joint causing sharp pain with movement, this may be due to a stiff shoulder joint, a rotator cuff imbalance, spinal stiffness or any combination.
If the pain radiates down the arm or is accompanied by weakness or numbness, physiotherapy can help identify the root cause, treat the pain, resolve underlying muscle imbalances and restore function.

Why A Personalised Approach Matters
Many people struggling with chronic shoulder pain have tried various treatments with mixed results. Whether it’s cortisone injections, painkillers, or massage therapy, these approaches often provide short-term relief without fixing the underlying issue.

Posted on Fiona OBrien13 June 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Love the classes being provided by Patrick at our workplace. Nearly 10 weeks in and always a full class, even waiting list. He will accomodate everyone and ensures he can walk the room ensuring everyone is doing the exercises correctly. The class is very enjoyable and we are progressing with flexability which is amazing. Thanks FionaPosted on Maeve McCarthy10 June 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Have been doing weekly classes with Patrick for the last few months and they have been thoroughly enjoyable. Each week is a challenge but great to feel progress as time goes by to be able for more intense sessions. Looking forward to continuing the course over the coming months!Posted on Eileen Triggs29 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent service, would recommendPosted on Emma Tarragon28 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I broke my arm last summer (radius and ulna fracture ) and started going to APC Physio in October of 2023. As a dancer, I was really eager to make a full recovery and to get back to dancing ASAP. My practitioner was Mr Steven Gilmore, who happened to have the exact same injury and surgery as me. Steven is so kind and professional, he always made me feel comfortable and at ease during our sessions. His knowledge is evident and he is extremely thorough in his process, which was very reassuring. After 7 months and 12 sessions with Steven, my arm is almost completely back to normal and I have all the tools I need to make a full recovery. I’m so glad I trusted him with my injury as I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I would highly recommend Steven and the APC Physio & Sports Clinic in Cork City.Posted on Orla Doyle23 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I visited APC as I was having some tightness/discomfort in my left leg when I ran. Craig (as always) was professional and great to speak with. He thoroughly investigated the issue and was able to resolve it on one visit. I’ve had no issues with it since. High recommend.Posted on Sally Rimmington21 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a free consultation and found them to be very honest and I didn’t feel obligated to sign up for a series of sessions, I would highly recommend APC.Posted on LC86 _19 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a nice experience with both Craig and Patrick. They both listened and evaluated my back pain extensively. Initially I not only had back pain, but also pain in my buttock, my adductors... I was in bits as one would say. Through exercises and stretches and some hands on treatment, some of my problems were eradicated. Unfortunately, I still deal with some back pain at times but I go back to the exercises and stretches given to me and get some relief that way. Back pain is very complex and highly individual in my opinion. I would definitely recommend the clinic for anybody in need of physiotherapy treatment.Posted on Siobhan Luddy17 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It’s taken me ages to get around to writing this review. I had chronic neck pain and restricted head movement. After 3 sessions I am better than ever and a very simple exercise a few times a week. Only regret was that I didn’t go sooner. Thanks so muchPosted on Paula O Driscoll11 May 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Really good physio always so helpful and easy to contact.
